A Journey from Nuns to Dazzling Lights: Jeff Dobrow's Artistic Evolution
Jeff Dobrow's artistic journey, from a strict Catholic upbringing to projection art mastery, showcases a unique blend of discipline and creativity.

Stepping into the world of video-projected art, Jeff Dobrow has embarked on a captivating journey that began in the structured confines of a Latin Catholic academy and has culminated in his stunning visual displays seen today. Having his artistic flair nurtured by strict nuns and further honed by a career in commercial programming, Dobrow now stands as a pioneering force in projection art.
The Spark in the Classroom
As a young boy, Jeff Dobrow was introduced to a disciplined art program at a Latin Catholic academy. The precision demanded by the nuns in his early life laid the groundwork for his meticulous approach to creating authentic video-mapped projections. “The nuns taught a very precise, disciplined art program,” Dobrow recalls, reminiscing about his strict but formative years.
Evolution through Technology
Dobrow’s fascination with technology ignited at the age of 12 in a Tandy RadioShack store. Discovering computers and delving into programming, he found himself at the forefront of an emerging industry. His talents, initially applied in text-based video game creation, seamlessly transitioned into the realm of video-mapped art. “I took to programming heavily and got into offering immersive experiences,” he says, reflecting on his early encounters with emerging computer graphics.
From Commerce to Creativity
In his twenties, Dobrow found himself deeply entrenched in the advertising world, creating graphics and animations for the broadcast industry. Despite his success, a pivotal Burning Man experience transformed his perspective. Dobrow realized that his life had become dominated by material pursuits, and he sought an escape into genuine artistic expression. “The experience at Burning Man changed everything in me,” he confesses, marking the turning point that led him to projection art.
Projection Art: The New Horizon
Today, Dobrow uses sophisticated tools like 3D Lidar scanners to capture the exact dimensions of structures. His art extends beyond mere animation; it transforms buildings into vibrant canvases. His work, showcased at events like SOMA Night Lights, reveals the fusion of art and technology as an immersive experience. “My art fits back on the building like a Jell-O mold,” Dobrow explains, delighting audiences with his precise and enchanting visual displays.
Reflecting on the Journey
Reflecting on a career that spans decades and disciplines, Dobrow sees his journey as one of continuous growth and exploration. Projection art, with its potential to inspire and captivate, has become his platform for spreading empowerment and joy. “So far, so good,” he concludes, embracing the satisfaction of creating interpretive works that resonate widely.
As Dobrow continues to innovate and inspire, his journey from disciplined beginnings to artistic brilliance stands as a testament to the transformative power of art and technology.
