Against the background of the introduction of large-scale sanctions and the withdrawal of foreign automakers from the country, production of cars in Russia collapsed by 67% in 2022, to a historical minimum of 450 thousand units.

The deepest annual drop in production in modern Russian history had previously been recorded by Rosstat in 2009. At that time, during the crisis in the global economy and the automotive industry, 597 thousand passenger cars were produced, which was once the lowest figure since 1972.
