Canada has confiscated a transport aircraft, the An-124, owned by the Russian company Volga-Dnepr, which has been stationed in Toronto since last year. The Canadian government intends to transfer the aircraft to Ukraine.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made this announcement during his visit to Kyiv on Saturday, June 10.
The An-124 arrived in Toronto on February 27, 2022, but failed to depart from Canada before the country closed its airspace to Russian aviation. Since then, the aircraft has remained grounded at Toronto’s international airport, while the Russian airline has accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees for its prolonged stay.
The decision to confiscate the An-124 aligns with Canada’s ongoing support for Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
