Celebrate Culture and Compassion: MSU's Burmese Festival of Lights Illuminates Hearts

The Myanmar Student Union (MSU) is gearing up to host the much-anticipated Tazaungdaing: Burmese Festival of Lights on November 12th, offering a heartwarming experience at the Fireside dining room in Building 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A Celebration of Hope and Unity

Martin Tun, an enthusiastic member of the MSU, emphasized the profound cultural significance of the festival. “Tazaungdaing is more than just a celebration; it’s a time for families and friends to come together, pay tribute to our elders, and light lanterns as symbols of hope and wisdom,” expressed Tun. “It’s about unity and the enduring spirit of our culture.”

Building Bridges Across Continents

The festival also serves as a bridge for Burmese immigrant students at Skyline, connecting them to their roots amidst the hustle and bustle of academic life. “Being thousands of miles away from home, this festival is a lifeline to our heritage,” says Tun. It offers comfort and a sense of belonging to those navigating a new culture.

A Stand Against Oppression

This year, the festival takes on added significance as it aims to raise awareness about the ongoing military dictatorship in Burma and its impact on the local communities. Despite the challenges, the MSU seeks to illuminate the struggles of the Burmese people and galvanize support for refugees through fundraising efforts.

Reflecting on Success and Looking Forward

Reflecting on last year’s festivities, Tun recounted, “Through the Skyline community’s participation, we successfully raised nearly $1,000 for internally displaced individuals in Burma. The event was a resounding success with carnival games, traditional food, and cultural performances.”

This year’s festival promises even more, with an eclectic mix of activities that not only entertain but also educate and empower the community to make a meaningful impact. As stated in The Skyline View, the spirit of Tazaungdaing lives on, echoing the triumph of light over darkness.
