Georgia's ruling political faction, "Georgian Dream," has formally requested the United States Embassy to revoke sanctions imposed on several Georgian judges. This appeal was made public by Mamuka Mdinaradze, the leader of the party's parliamentary majority and executive secretary, according to a report by "European Truth" covered by the SOVA project.
Mdinaradze articulated the party's firm stance on this matter, emphasizing the absence of evidence that would justify the sanctions against the judges. He warned that unfounded decisions, such as these sanctions, could potentially ignite anti-American and anti-Western sentiments. Consequently, the party firmly demands the United States to rescind these sanctions and prevent any malicious entities from exploiting the situation.
Expressing hope for an objective resolution during Ambassador Robin Danning's tenure, Mdinaradze lamented the lack of evidence supporting the relevance of the sanctions, let alone the premises or substantial grounds for their implementation.
Further, Mdinaradze criticized what he described as "groundless sanctions" against several judges, arguing they encourage a covert campaign against the judiciary. This campaign, he claimed, is supported by ordinary members of the public sector, the United National Movement, and its various offshoots.
Recalling the context, the U.S. Department of State employed its sanctioning mechanism for the first time in the history of Georgian-American relations in April of the previous year, targeting three active and one former Georgian judge. They were accused of undermining the rule of law and public trust in Georgia's judicial system. The sanctions, including visa restrictions for the four judges and their family members, were imposed due to their alleged involvement in significant corruption.
More recently, the U.S. State Department expressed concerns over a bill initiated by the "Georgian Dream" party aimed at combating "LGBT propaganda" and protecting "family values." This legislative proposal has added another layer of complexity to the nuanced dialogue between Georgia and the United States on issues of democracy, human rights, and governance.
