Gothic 20th Anniversary! Why Do Players Love This Game So Much

On March 15, 2001, the first Gothic, the cult RPG from Piranha Bytes, was released in Germany. On the occasion of Gothic 20th anniversary, we tell you why the players loved it so much.

Those who have not seen the first Gothic now find it difficult to believe that in 2001 Piranha Bytes created a truly unique and, in many ways, innovative game. Now the studio uses ancient cliches for the tenth time, but then it set the genre fashion in computer role-playing games. Gothic was one of the very few serious 3D RPGs on the PC.

At the same time, Gothic did everything in its own way, surprising an unprepared player. At first, the controls seemed inconvenient - to hit, players had to press the mouse button simultaneously and the key to moving forward. However, the players quickly got used to it.

Piranha Bytes' approach to the structure of the game world was also special. Even now, not all screenwriters think about how to explain the limitations of the world from the point of view of the plot, but in Gothic already in 2001, there was the same magic barrier.

The first Gothic is the most important part of the series. Piranha Bytes created its famous role-playing formula with teachers, camps, complete freedom of movement, and the desire to create a small but eventful game world.
