In the vibrant city of Bengaluru, a groundbreaking workshop on hydrogen fuel technologies and future trends has sparked a wave of optimism and enthusiasm. This two-day event was hosted by Alliance University in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and The Combustion Institute – Indian Section (CIIS). The event promises to redefine the role of hydrogen as a clean, sustainable energy source in India.

Unlocking Employment Opportunities

Priestly B. Shan, Vice-Chancellor of Alliance University, painted a promising picture of the employment potential in India’s hydrogen transition. “One of the key opportunities is the creation of large-scale employment,” he remarked. The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to facilitate 6 lakh new jobs by 2030, and according to Shan, these new opportunities underscore the transformative power of this clean energy transition.

Challenges and Innovations in Hydrogen Integration

Green hydrogen, a sustainable treasure, still grapples with cost challenges. With costs almost twice that of its grey or brown counterparts, there’s a pressing need for innovation. Pradip Kumar Pandey, Secretary of CIIS, emphasized the importance of reducing global costs to $1 per kilogram through collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and industries. According to him, “The goal is to make green hydrogen as affordable as conventional alternatives.”

Unveiling Technological Hurdles

Abhay G. Chebbi, Pro Chancellor of Alliance University, reiterated the significance of overcoming technological hurdles over policy challenges. “While policy is evolving, it is primarily technology that presents the biggest hurdle,” he noted. The focus is now on accelerating indigenous technological development for hydrogen adoption.

A Convergence of Experts and Pioneers

The workshop brought together industry experts, academic researchers, and policymakers to delve into hydrogen’s applications in Internal Combustion (IC) Engines, Gas Turbine Engines, and emerging propulsion systems. In-depth discussions revolved around hydrogen integration, safety protocols, and the pivotal role of AI/ML in hydrogen engine design.

A Collective Vision for a Green Future

As Vijay Kumar Saraswat delivered the inaugural keynote on ‘India’s Hydrogen Policy and Future Trends’, the sense of collective vision for a green future was palpable. According to The Hindu, the ongoing efforts to make hydrogen-based solutions more accessible and cost-effective are set to transform India’s energy landscape.

This workshop in Bengaluru marks a significant step towards harnessing hydrogen’s potential to not only meet energy demands but also to foster economic growth and sustainability in India.
