The unopened Super Mario 64 game cartridge was sold for $1.5 million at Heritage, breaking a new record. Before that, the most expensive lot was The Legends of Zelda for the NES, which was sold for 870 thousand dollars. This record lasted only two days, as the auction reported on Twitter.

Super Mario 64 is the first and best-selling 3D Mario game. This cartridge was released in 1996 by the Japanese company Nintendo.

The other most expensive piece was Super Mario Bros., which was sold for $660,000 in April 2021. The condition of the Super Mario 64 cartridge was rated at 9.8 out of 10, and there are now only five such copies left.

The trades took place from 9 to 11 July. The starting price of the lot was $100,000. The game was initially bought as a Christmas present, but forgotten in the drawer where it has been sitting since 1996.
