The famous Hugo Awards in 2021 will get a new category. The organizers announced that they would present awards to the best video game of 2020: the World Science Fiction Convention rules stipulate additional one-time awards.
“Since early 2020, many of us have spent more time gaming than we ever expected. This award will offer fans an opportunity to celebrate the games that have been meaningful, joyful and exceptional over this past year,” said Collette Fozard, the co-chair of the 79th World Science Fiction Convention, which will be held in Washington DC in August.
The Hugo Awards Committee considers making the gaming award permanent by adding the category Best Game or Interactive Experience. So far, rockets have been awarded to authors of the best literary works, graphic novels, theatrical or film performances, and the best non-professional creators.
Over the years, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Clifford Simak, Roger Zelazny, Ursula Le Guin, Arthur Clarke, William Gibson, J.K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Liu Tsysin, and others have become Hugo laureates.
We will recognize the winner of the first and possibly the only Hugo game award during the 79th World Science Fiction Convention. It will be held from 25 to 29 August 2021 under the title DisCon III.
