The Netherlands government plans to end Russian oil and gas purchases by the end of 2022, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte told journalists at a weekly press conference on Friday.

In 2020, the Netherlands relied on Russia for nearly one-third of its total crude imports.

“What the Netherlands would actually like to achieve is being independent of Russian gas and Russian oil before the end of the year,” Rutte said, adding that they “could achieve this by working hard on a mix of energy savings and sustainability, but it will also have to lead to the import of energy from other countries, including liquid natural gas.”
