The New Kid Trend: Cash Over Video Games This Holiday Season!
Kids prioritize cash as their top holiday gift preference, with video games following closely. Discover the surprising trends in kids' holiday wish lists.
As the holiday season approaches, parents everywhere are wondering what their little ones truly desire under the Christmas tree. According to the recently published Entertainment Software Association (ESA) holiday shopping survey, there’s a surprising twist this year: while video games are a popular choice, it’s the allure of cold hard cash that truly steals the show.
Video Games or Cash?
ESA’s survey reveals that 59% of kids this holiday are looking forward to video games as a gift, but an even higher 69% are hoping for cash or gift cards. This marks a shift in kids’ priorities, where unwrapping envelopes may bring more delight than gaming consoles. It’s a trend that’s catching on quickly and reshaping holiday shopping lists across the country.
Parents and Playtime
With 58% of parents reporting plans to join their kids in gaming adventures, the survey illustrates a growing desire for shared digital experiences. Younger children, particularly in the 5-7 age group, express a 73% interest in gaming with family, signifying a yearning for connection in our increasingly digital world.
The Wish List Diversifies
Beyond the desire for cash and games themselves, kids are also eyeing various gaming merchandise. From in-game currency and consoles to video game accessories and subscriptions, children are expanding their gaming ecosystem. GameSpot
The Price of Joy
Parents intending to place gaming consoles and titles beneath the tree this year are looking at an average spend of $736.83. While this figure might initially raise eyebrows, it’s a reflection of the rising costs of games and consoles driven by tariffs and market factors.
A Message from ESA’s President
“Our research shows that beyond gifts, kids cherish family bonding through gaming experiences. As life feels more detached, video games provide a joyous bridge to connect with loved ones,” shared Stan Pierre-Louis, ESA’s president and CEO.
Survey Details
This insight into children’s holiday preferences is based on a five-minute online survey conducted by YouGov and ESA between September 26-30, involving over 1,900 participants ages 5-65, representing the US demographic.
As we head into the festive season, it’s clear that while video games continue to be a staple on kids’ wish lists, the modern child might just prefer feeling the crispness of cash between their fingers.
